Now and Then, former Six Bells PH, Garndiffraith

The former Rhymney Brewery pub, the Six Bells, Harpers Road, Garndiffaith, Pontypool is now a private residence. The former railway line to Blaenavon runs to the right of the picture and Six Bells was the original name for the station, it changed to Garndiffaith in 1922.

Now and Then, former Railway Inn, Gilwern

The former Rhymney Brewery pub, The Railway Inn, Station Road, Gilwern, Monmouthshire is now a private residence called "The Old Railway Inn". The inn is situated above the village and the former Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny railway ran to the right of the picture.

Now and Then, former Royal Hotel, Clydach Vale


The former Royal Hotel, Court Street, corner of Fern Terrace, Clydach Vale. Another former Rhymney pub, demolished together with the adjoining house to widen the road going downhill. Odly the telephone poles appear to have remained in their same positions!

The Usk Hotel, Station Road, Talybont-on-Usk, Powys, a former Rhymney Brewery pub dates back to the 1840s and was built opposite the now long-gone train station. Now known as the Usk Inn.

Now and Then, former Royal Arms, Pantywaun

The former Royal Arms, Pant-y-Waun, Merthyr Tydfil. Not only has the pub disappeared but the entire village of Pant-y-waun has gone as well as the whole village became an open-cast mine, the Royal Arms Opencast in the 1960s, now filled in and the area landscaped with a new road cutting the site of the pub.

Now & Then, former Dynevor Arms, Merthyr Tydfil

The former Dynevor Arms, Swansea Road, Merthyr Tydfil, a former Rhymney Brewery pub, now demolished and the building in the Street View image, which was built on land behind the pub is now a Jehovah's Witness cult centre. Some photos of the last night in the pub can be found here. The pub was named after the local landowners.

Now and Then, former Rising Sun PH, Cefn Coed-y-Cymmer


The former Rising Sun PH, High Street, Cefn Coed-y-Cymmer, Merthyr Tydfil. Another long lost Rhymney Brewery pub, this pub was demolished in 1962.
Thirsty ex-patrons of the pub did not have to go far for another drink though as opposite is the Lord Raglan pub which in the late 1990s briefly experimented with brewing their own beer (it wasn't very good!)

Now & Then, former Lord Wimborne PH, Cardiff

The former Lord Wimborne PH, 91-93 Portmanmoor Road on corner with Pontypridd Street, Splott, Cardiff, demolished in the 1970s along with the nearby houses and even the streets have gone!. I had to refer back to an 1888 OS map to confirm where Pontypridd Street was, shown below the Google Street view image.
The pub was named after Ivor Churchill Guest, Lord Wimborne, grandson of Sir JJ Guest, owner of the original Dowlais Works in Merthyr Tydfil

Now and Then, former Green Dragon Inn, Aberdare

The above photo shows the rear of the former Green Dragon Inn after what appears to be a fire, Had a few problems identifying this location but the windows of the Methodist Church on the left, the cast iron decorative railings of the Constitutional Club roof and the spire of St E;vans Church are all visible from this angle. Added to that the road off High Street is called Green Street. The old photo was slightly to the right of the Google Street View image.

Now and Then, Former Star Hotel, Ystrad


Another ex-Rhymney Brewery pub is the former Star Hotel Gelligaled, Ystrad, an impressive building built in 1913 on an older site, possibly on the site of the oldest pub in the Rhondda Valley. Now converted to a supermarket. More history on the former pub here

The former Rhymney Brewery pub, The Crown Inn, Elled Road, Waunfelin, Pontypool, is now known as The Little Crown. Pub is marked on the 1888 OS map so dates at least before then.

 The Prince of Wales, 21 High Street, Treorchy. A former Rhymney Brewery pub, the pictures show the pub after the takeover by Whitbread and by the look of the cars date to the 1970s





The hatchway in the wall is unusual, perhaps used for off-sales?

The former Victoria Inn, Quaker's Yard, Mid-Glamorgan is now a private house, although the fading Rhymney Brewey Hobby Horse can still be seen on the side of the building
